The following article appeared in the Saddleworth Rangers programme for the match against Waterhead in this season's National Conference Division 1.
"Many thanks to Rugby Oldham for coming up with the brilliant notion of the Tri-Team Challenge which enters its second leg today.
This development follows a bruising few months for the Trust, which, as you will recall, was set up with the clear intention of gaining a new home for professional rugby in Oldham to replace the dear, departed Watersheddings. However, the professional club publicly signaled that it wanted to go it alone on that issue, leaving the Trust somewhat in no-man's-land and balloted its members on its future.
From a personal perspective, I have witnessed far too many crisis and false dawns in watching Oldham over a lifetime. The work of Bill Quinn at Oldham RLFC has been admirable since he took the helm. He is able currently to back his ambitions with money and the new commercial department seems to have some clue about where it is going. So far, so good.
But what happens if it all goes wrong again? There will be the need, if we want professional rugby in the town, for a group of people to step in and somehow keep it going. For that reason the Trust should stay active and bring as many like minded individuals together in the town to support all aspects of rugby and if the evil day ever arrives once more, then there will be a cohesive group of people who can at least have a go at rescuing it all over again.
Best of luck to Rugby Oldham and all involved with it."
