RUGBY OLDHAM CHALLENGE TROPHY

The prestigious RUGBY OLDHAM CHALLENGE TROPHY won last season by Rochdale Cobras is again being competed for by the Higginshaw, Hollinwood, Rochdale Cobras, Saddleworth Rangers, Oldham St Annes, Waterhead and Fitton Hill clubs.
Whilst it has always been the case that each of the seven sides is eligible to pick up points from every league match in the division in which they play the problem this time around is that clubs aren't just competing in different competitions which have historically been run simultaneously but will be playing at different times of year. Higginshaw and Hollinwood will be turning out in the North West Counties' winter leagues kicking-off in September and running through to spring of 2012 whilst Saddleworth Rangers, Oldham St Annes, Waterhead, Fitton Hill and Rochdale Cobras will be playing summer rugby firing-up in March 2012.
This year's Rugby Oldham Challenge Trophy will therefore commence with the kick-off of the winter season in September and continue until the last match of the summer season has been completed in the autumn of 2012.
The Interim Competition which features the Saddleworth Rangers, Oldham St. Annes and Waterhead clubs being played between August and November 2011 will NOT qualify for points towards the Rugby Oldham Challenge Trophy.
Points are awarded as follows:
3 points for a win
2 points for a draw
1 bonus point for a loss by 12 points or less
There are also extra bonus points for both defensive and attacking prowess:
1 extra bonus point is awarded for every 10 points scored in a game.
1 bonus point for conceding 30 points or below.
2 points for conceding 20 points or below.
3 points for conceding 10 points or below.
In the event of clubs playing an uneven amount of fixtures at the end of the season points totals will be adjusted on a percentage basis.
Again, just as last season, league matches for the forthcoming weekend will be formatted in a RUGBY OLDHAM advert printed each Thursday in the Oldham Evening Chronicle. League tables will also be printed regularly in the Oldham Evening Chronicle along with match reports and other features.
Spice is added by the Man - of - Steel competition worth £500 to the winner again sponsored this season by local builders' merchants JOS. PARR (ALCO) LTD.

2010 / 2011 SEASON OVERVIEW – 2nd MAY 2011
The Rugby Oldham Senior Club Challenge was quite different to the competitions of previous years. This stemmed from the fact that both Saddleworth Rangers and St. Annes had been promoted and were therefore less likely to produce the stunning results of previous years at a higher level of competition. This opened up the Challenge to the Oldham amateur Leagues other member clubs which is just what it was designed to do. Two clubs in particular took advantage and it became clear fairly early that Rochdale Cobras and Hollinwood were going to enjoy good seasons.
The lead in the Challenge changed hands several times and was a ding-dong tussle until the last few games when Hollinwood finally ran out of steam. Although Hollinwood outscored Cobras in the points for column the situation was reversed in the points against. So in the end it could be said that’ it was the defence wot won it’. Hollinwood perhaps succumbed to a good cup run and injuries that depleted their resources. However in a season that fell into two distinct phases because of the winter weather Rochdale Cobras showed the consistency required to carry off the trophy.
Our congratulations on their achievement and thanks to all our amateur clubs for the sterling work they do to keep the game alive and well in the town.

2010 / 2011 SEASON OVERVIEW - WELL DONE ST.ANNES!
The Junior Club Challenge in 2010-11 was a close fought affair right through the season. All four competing clubs were in with a chance of taking the honours at some point during the campaign. This was particularly gratifying for newcomers Milnrow Cobras whose two sides at U14 and U13 levels acquitted themselves well and whose results promise a bright future.
In the end Oldham St. Annes were worthy winners because consistency accumulates points . Not only were St. Annes consistent in their results and scores but they did it across three different age groups and were in fact the only club with teams at each of the qualifying age ranges. To have three good sides at each of U15, U14 and U13 levels is a tribute to a well structured club with good coaches and commitment. Of course similar sentiments apply to all the competitors because it takes great dedication and organization to provide the facilities and training our youngsters enjoy. Everyone involved is deserving of the highest praise.

Rugby Oldham Challenge 2010 - 2011
Rugby Oldham are pleased to announce that they will again be sponsoring the challenge trophy (Rugby Oldham Challenge) which will be competed for throughout the 2010-11 season by amateur sides affiliated to the Oldham Amateur League irrespective of which league and division they participate in. Teams competing will include Saddleworth Rangers, St Annes, Waterhead, Rochdale Cobras, Higginshaw, Hollinwood and newly formed Fitton Hill and Hathershaw. The Rugby Oldham Challenge Trophy will be presented to the winning club at the annual Amateur League Dinner to be held in May.
Rugby Oldham also organize the Man of Steel competition which carries with it a £500 prize kindly donated by local builders & timber merchants Joseph Parr (Alco) Ltd. Again, the award is made at the prestigious Amateur League Dinner which, in 2010 was held at the White Hart, Lydgate. In 2010 the winner was Danny Kay from Oldham St. Annes and in 2009 David Sweeney from Higginshaw.
The competition will again be driven forward by an advert being placed by Rugby Oldham in the Oldham Evening Chronicle each Thursday throughout the season promoting the weekend’s fixtures.
Without doubt the profile of the matches played last season was enhanced by this advertising support backed by regular updates and match reports featured in the Chronicle each Thursday.
To complement the Amateur Club Challenge Rugby Oldham also runs the Junior Club Challenge. This is competed for by all clubs running teams at U13, U14 and U15 age groups. In 2010-11 this means the competing clubs are Milnrow Cobras, Oldham St. Annes, Saddleworth Rangers and Waterhead with previous competing club Higginshaw having seen their youth team graduate to a higher age group.
This years structure is as follows
Each of the six sides will be eligible to pick up points from every league match in which they play. Because clubs compete in different competitions - Higginshaw and Cobras in the North West Counties, Hollinwood in the Pennine and Saddlworth Rangers, St Annes and Waterhead in the National Conference leagues a min-league will again be created.
Points will be awarded as follows:

The competion was initially established as a Tri Team Challenge, when three of our local clubs, St. Annes, Saddleworth and Waterhead were all in the same division of the National Conference League. The following season the competion was expanded to feature all our local clubs and was renamed. The competion now continues to grow seaon by season.
