ROUGHYEDS ANNOUNCE HOME VENUE FOR 2008 RESERVES GAMES
HOME fixtures for the new Roughyeds reserve team, backed by Rugby Oldham, will be played at Sedgley Park, starting this Thursday, April 10 with a derby clash against Rochdale Hornets, kick-off 7.30pm. Six of the eight home league games will now be played at the Whitefield venue on Thursday evenings, but those against Workington Town and Barrow Raiders will go ahead there as originally scheduled on Saturdays, July 5 and 12 respectively, with 2.30pm kick-offs. Said chief executive Chris Hamilton: "We are delighted to announce Sedgley Park as our home venue for the reserves. We get on well with our friends over there and we have built up a good relationship with them during the time we have been going there to stage first-team games. "They have been very helpful in accommodating us on this. It has taken some time to sort things out because we have had to juggle things around a bit to fit in with their requirements. "It's a good ground on which to play and watch rugby league and we know from past experience that our fans like the ground and the facilities on offer. "It would be nice to think our fans will be going along to watch some stars of the future, hopefully in Oldham shirts." Admission to reserve games will be £4 for adults and £2 for children and OAPs. Secure parking will be available inside the ground for £1 with all takings going to the Roughyeds and used to offset the costs involved in running the reserve team. Bars will be open at the ground and the Sedgley Park staff will make refreshments available, starting this Thursday, but the extent and the continuity of that will depend on whether there is sufficient demand. The eight home fixtures at Sedgley Park are as follows:
Thursday, April 10 v Rochdale Hornets (7.30);
Thursday, May 1 v Leigh Centurions (7.30);
Thursday, May 8 v Salford City Reds (7.30);
Thursday, June 12 v Hunslet Hawks (7.30);
Thursday, June 19 v Featherstone Rovers (7.30);
Saturday,July 5 v Workington Town (2.30);
Saturday, July 12 v Barrow Raiders (2.30);
Thursday, July 24 v Widnes Vikings (7.30).

MATCH REPORT - LEIGH RES 48 v OLDHAM RESERVES 6
Report kindly provided by Roger Halstead
THE Roughyeds new reserve team went down 48-6 to a strong Leigh side at Hilton Park in their first league match of the season, but the score did not reflect the contribution Oldham made to the game. Leigh, traditionally strong at this level, played veteran Welsh prop Gareth Price after a spell out due to suspension and in centre Adam Thomas and scrum-half Ryan Powell they had two young backs who had played first-team rugby this year. Unlike when they won at Featherstone in a friendly and had Simeon Hoyle making his comeback after injury, Oldham had no first-team assistance this time. However, they produced a promising performance for more than an hour, and trailed only 10-6 until the last play of the first half when Leigh went over in the corner for their third try to make it 14-6 at the interval. The home side scored six tries in the second half, but four of those were in the last ten minutes when the young Roughyeds were out on their feet. Watched by head coach Steve Deakin, Oldham played with loads of spirit and enthusiasm. They tackled tenaciously at close quarters and at one-on-one, but they didn't quite possess Leigh's speed of running and handling and were consequently outflanked regularly, particularly so in the final few minutes. Having said that, they created several chances of their own and with a little more speed through hands they would surely have scored two or three more tries of their own. Full-back Anthony H Bingham scored Oldham's solitary try on the right after centre Ashley Wildman had split the home defence apart with a smashing break down the left. Bingham, who had an extremely impressive game, looked to have scored a second after half-time but, after consulting his touchjudge, the referee ruled that the Oldham man had been held up over the line. Bingham also did well in defence, while catching the eye numerous times with his clever return of the ball out of his own 20. In short, he looked a very good prospect indeed. Others to go well included stand-off Ethan Langhorn and forwards Alex Eyres, Chris Clarke, Phil Jagger and Martin Sarsfield, a substitute. Bingham's try was converted by Mark Smith. The gap between the sides was in little evidence in the first half hour, but it began to expand following a flare-up in which players of both sides traded punches. Play resumed with a penalty to Oldham, but not before rival centres Wildman (Oldham) and Thomas (Leigh) were sin-binned and Leigh's No 16 Adam Higson was sent off for running in and getting involved. Though a man down for all the second half, Leigh had enough experience, speed and nous to get well on top, but Oldham will take heart from a spirited performance which augurs well for the rest of the season, given that this is a brand new side still with plenty of learning to do. All the signs are that coaches John Hough and Leo Casey are doing a fine job in moulding this team together. Team: Bingham; Hayes, Fisher, Wildman, Nelson; Langhorn, Lowe;Eyres, Mansfield, Clarke, Schofield, Jagger, Smith. Subs: Toft, Jeffery, Sarsfield.

Salford Res v Oldham Reserves
Unfortunately, todays first league game for the new reserves side, was called off. The game was due to be played as a curtain raiser to Salfords Easter Monday fixture. However following the torrential rail in the last few days Salford decided to protect their pitch against further damage and called the curtain raiser off.
Having enjoyed a victory in the final warm up game against Featherstone last week, the young Roughyeds reserve team now have a further nine days to prepare for the next league encounter. The game will be against Leigh (away) on Wednesday 2nd April with a 7.30 kick-off
